Need you guys to settle the score. There is a saying this nonsense you can say I could care less or you could say I couldn't care less. No, you could say both. One of them makes sense and the other doesn't They're both the same.
They're interchangeable I could and couldn't or opposites are not interchangeable. In this context, it is okay I took care less means I don't care I couldn't care lessons I don't care Merriam-Webster says that they're interchangeable because I just gave up on humankind because they couldn't get it right. You cannot use code and couldn't as interchangeable. Makes no bloody sense.
Yes, you can I cannot make another video with you later.
He's correct but we're just supposed to ignore when people say it wrong because both phrases mean the same thing. Language, like culture, changes and evolves.
"I could care less" means you care a little
I'm with Trid here.
It's the same reason the dictionary also has figuratively as a definition for literally. Too many people used the wrong word for long enough, they gave up on humankind and added the other. I don't care what the dictionary says, literally doesn't mean figuratively lol
Not interchangable
both valid points, as you say , it all depends on the context of your statement, or point.😊
I could care less is WRONG
I never understood this topic, obviously the correct one is « couldn’t », meaning there is no, nada, zero care from someone to a certain topic or someone or whatever …
Team COULDN'T.
It's bad grammar to say it the other way.
Don't let Bad Grammar destroy the English fucking language!
Lol
You wise husband is correct.
If you could care less, then you care a smidge.
If you couldn't care less, then there is no way that you could care any less than you already do.
As a Grammar Nazi, I assure you that your husband is correct.
Couldn't
If you could care less then why the fuck are you saying it?
"I could care less" means you care -> your care is greater than zero.
"I couldn't care less", the actual saying for English speakers, rather than Americans, means you do not care. Your care is zero and therfore could NOT be less.
They are opposites and are not interchangeable in any intelligible way.
Couldn’t
not the same. not interchangeable
Everyone needs the cultural context to understand this.
I could care less used to be said with a hint of sarcasm. So, the direct meaning was opposite of the intent of the phrase. And at that time, when you used this phrase in this specific way, it was understood that what you meant was you didn't give a flying fuck.
Sarcasm was much more rampant, biting, and subtle in the 90's so it was a common phrase and since then, "I could care less" has continued to be used in this way. Unfortunately, the sarcasm was lost at some point but the phrase remained-(and with it, it's original meaning)but the context has been lost. So, people get confused by the phrase now, and confuse the original intent with ignorance. It's kinda sad.
I use them interchangeably, but i also happen to think true democracy means personal responsibility.
I sucked at english when i was at school.
